Machining front discs brakes to suit the Hillman Imp

The kits we bring in have been a regular item and from the same supplier in the UK.

We use local Ford calipers and purchase new imported discs and brake pads.

The caliper has been refurbished by a specialist company, the new brake disc will be bored to take the Imps 4" PCD stud centers. In this case the 239mm diameter Ford KA disc is too large for the Imps standard 12"steel rim, we need to have the disc cut down to a diameter of 220mm only.

This brake needs no servo, the change to a 0.070" brake cylinder is recommended but the original 0.065 cylinder on the standard Imp works quite well, the client will be given the option, which will cost around GBP50 so about R800 or so.

Working with new off the shelf parts is such a pleasure!

He has already supplied the silicone brake fluid he wants, a good idea on any classic car, there will be no degrade in the fluid as the years goes by.

How easy is that.

A new Hillman Imp for sale

Hillman Imps have been around for some fifty two years (52) and I have had the pleasure and good fortune to have owned my first Imp around fifty years (50) ago, so my understanding of them is vast.

Now and again I am asked to re build or service them, the last re build was a year in the making but much of that time was done as outworks. A new one will of course not be possible but a totally rebuilt one should be.

Rootes Car Co, Scotland press release picture.

The problem now is not finding the spares, it is finding the car to rebuild, there are maybe one or two that I know of in South Africa that may be for sale, bare shells and that kind of thing.

The picture of the blue car shows the last Imp Saloon done by me, its is a 1971 model and a one owner Hillman Imp Deluxe. The car was turned upside down for a number of months while the bottom of the car was restored, plus the cars suspensions.

No expense was saved on this cars restoration, we had a very good body and floor pan, suspension mounts, the original engine and transaxle so all numbers match, plus as a one owner car the buyer will become only the second licenced owner in 43 years!

Upgrades such front a disc brakes are all undertaken.

The red car interior is the car being worked on now, some eleven ( 11 ) months on and while the car is a daily driver if required, it is not quite complete, this one is a 1967 Hillman Imp Californian coupe, it is said there are less than sixty coupe's left world wide , if that as some say there may be fifty five left ( 55 ) only?

This Imp Californian is my own car, one other coupe exists in South Africa that I know of, it may be for sale?

Contact me if your wanting a restored Hillman Imp.

Hillman Imp gets a Samcor Ford Electric Metallic Blue paint finish

The car is a one owner 1971 Hillman Imp Deluxe, its done around 90,000 miles and was imported to Cape Town when the owner emigrated to Cape Town, South Africa, since which time the car was in the care of two others but never registered as such.

The engine bay was sprayed some weeks back and in 2013, now we are into 2014 the work was done in the cars front compartment.

Work wise there were  at least four days spent cleaning and etch priming the area, the application of the  electric  metallic blue base coat and twin pack high gloss paints were the easy part! the choice of paint colour is a very close match to the original Roote/Chrysler one that was the cars original when built. The body paint you can see is not correct and in natural light has a purple shade to it, the entire car will be re painted to the electric blue metallic soon.

Hillman Imp disc brakes to a 12 steel rim

Normally we have fitted these kits to the larger 13"rim,steel or alloy but the person wanting  the 1971
Hillman Imp Deluxe wants to keep the ride original, so series 80 road tires will be used.

The screw driver end marks a small bump that these rims have, it may or may not foul the Ford Fiesta caliper, we recommend you grind two to three mm off that bump to be sure.

There can be some part of the bump left in place, just grind half of it off.

You can just see the Ford Fiesta caliper in the lower slots.
With these standard rims, at least the slots allow some air cooling, which will not be as effective with the Imps standard 8" drums all round.

Kit plates ex our UK supplier now in stock, Cape Town.

How easy is that!

Hillman Imp engines

This has been a fascination of mine from the age of seventeen when I got my very first car, it was a Balmoral Grey 1963 Hillman Imp.

Click on the images to enlarge them.

Since those early days I have built so many Imp engines that the numbers are lost to me.

Many have been the standard 875cc some have been the larger 998cc, one of which I raced here at the Killarney Circuit just outside  Cape Town.
